STATF EDirflfJ Ariaona Republic Safiirday, A26 The Apr 7, 1990 Stereo thief stores owner in BMW's trunk PORTRAITS OF ABUSE i t. Los Angeles Times LOS ANGELES A Beverly Hills man was locked in the trunk of his BMW for nearly 11 hours and driven about the city by a gunman he caught stealing the car's stereo, Los Angeles police say. Greg Sykes, 31, was freed Friday about 1:15 a.m. after a passer-by heard the 6-foot-6, 200-pound man hollering from inside the trunk of his 1984 BMW 325, which the thief had ditched in Hollywood. Sykes, who had been robbed of his money and watch, suffered only minor neck injuries, Detective Jim Tiampo said.
Sykes' ordeal began Thursday about 2:50 p.m. when he hopped out of the car to use a pay telephone, Tiampo said. "He had left the car unlocked I don't know why but he had also activated the anti-theft alarm," he said. Sykes rushed back to his car when the alarm went off seconds later, and he found the man trying to make off with the stereo. When Sykes yanked the man out of the car, the thief pulled a handgun and forced him into the back seat, Tiampo said.
"He took his watch and his money and made him get in the trunk," he said. "Then he just drove around the city with the guy screaming in the trunk." Sykes told investigators that he did not have "total recall" of his time in the trunk and believes that he fainted for brief periods, police said. Tiampo said that the thief opened the trunk occasionally to allow Sykes fresh air. "I guess he just wanted the radio," Tiampo said. "He didn't want the guy to suffocate and die." Jim Malloy via The Lowell (Mass.) Sun Kevin Deschene kicks and beats his family's dog, Champ, in photos taken secretly by Deschene's neighbor.
As a result of the pictures, taken last fall by Jim Malloy, Deschene, 19, was arrested. On Thursday, he was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail. Animal-rights advocates said it was the first time in at least 20 years that anyone in Massachusetts had been imprisoned for abusing an animal. Deschene and his family have contended the teen-ager was disciplining the dog for tearing up garbage.
