Fortnite's New Impostors Mode Explained (2024)

Fortnite took over the gaming world when it was first released and hasn’t stopped, consistently being one of the most talked-about and played online battle royales. However, Fortnite has more game modes than just battle royale. “Creative” mode has allowed players to craft their own Fortnite worlds and games, while “Save the World” mode has players engage in a PvE campaign to, well, save the world from monsters and other things that want to cause harm. Fortnite has decided to add a new game mode that seems to take inspiration from the breakout game Among Us.

Fortnite’s “Impostors” mode was introduced with a trailer that shows Dr. Slone and Agent Jonesy’s co-workers cleaning up after Jonesy disobeyed Slone and went off on his own to try to save the universe. Slone says Jones betrayed the Imagined Order andthat he wasn’t working alone. At this same moment, a figure steps out from the shadows and attacks a different agent before the screen rolls to announce themode. With such a sudden reveal, some might wonder what the new game mode will entail, and why it seem so similar to Among Us.

Fortnite Impostors Mode

The tagline for the new Fortnite Impostors mode is “trust nobody,” which already gives players an air of suspicion. The game mode includes a total of ten players - eight of which will be Agents, while the other two will be Impostors. All players will have a list of assignments to complete to maintain The Bridge, but the main goal of the Impostors is to eliminate all the Agents without being caught.

Agents will complete assignments like calibrations of chests and llamas, but will also have to keep their eyes peeled for Impostors or fallen allies. Agents will find “eliminated fragments” of their crewmates and call a meeting to determine who the Impostors are. If players aren’t careful, they may end up eliminating a fellow Agent instead of an Impostor.

Impostors, on the other hand, are tasked with causing mayhem and taking out Agents. They can do things like disable assignments, teleport players, or even throw a “Peely Party” that turns everyone into Peely so there’s no suspicion about who is doing what. Impostors can also complete real assignments, but each one completed means the Agents are closer to victory.

Communication is a crucial part of Fortnite’s Impostors mode, but public voice chat will not be usable during the mode. Instead, players can use party chat or Emotes and a Quick Chat menu to talk to other players. There can also be private games among friends with a minimum of four players. Games that start with less than eight players will only have one Impostor, while those with eight or more will have two Impostors.

When the fragments of an eliminated Agent are found, players will be launched into a Discussion to attempt to figure out who the Impostors are. Players will make their case for who is or isn’t an Impostor before voting to eject someone from The Bridge. Players don’t have to vote in every round, and in some cases it may be better to wait.

Fortnite Impostors Modeand Among Us Similarities

Fortnite's New Impostors Mode Explained (1)

As fun as Fortnite's Impostors mode sounds, there’s no denying how incredibly similarit is to Among Us. Among Us gained popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic, and its premise is almost copied and pasted into Fortnite’s Impostors mode. In Among Us, players are either Crewmates or Impostors, and must complete Tasks to maintain whatever the map may be.

It seems the only difference between Among Us and Fortnite Impostors mode is that the latter doesn’t appear to have players come back as ghosts to watch the rest of the match. Fans of both Among Us and Fortnite have noted the similarities between the two, and it seems the battle royale game did not collaborate with Among Us to create Fortnite Impostors mode. It’s disappointing to hear that such a large game did not collaborate with or give credit to Among Usdespite these clear similarities, but hopefullyFortnite Impostors mode will give credit where due.

Fortnite is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
