2 bomb scares evacuate NYC headquarters By Kim Sue Lla Perket Arizona Republic Religion Editor Edmond L. Browning, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, has received several letters threatening 'prominent Episcopalians" with assassination, and the church's New York City headquarters has been evacuated twice in the past week because of bomb threats. "We've turned all of the informa-, tion over to the New York City police and Secret Service," Browning told The Arizona Republic during an interview Monday in Phoenix. Jim Solhcim, news director for the Episcopal Church, said, "We've had demonstrations and everything else, but we've never had a bomb threat in the history of the center." The headquarters, called Episcopal Church Center, has been open since 1962. On April 2, the center received a handwritten letter threatening to "kill the two most prominent Episcopalians, male and female." Browning wouldn't speculate on who the targets might be, but church officials assume they are Browning and, possibly, his wife, Patricia, or Barbara Harris, suffragen bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachu- setts.
Harris is the church's first female bishop. The center received bomb threats from a telephone caller last Wednesday and Thursday. The building immediately was evacuated. Browning, head of the 2.7 million-member church, left Phoenix on Tuesday after a two-day visit to lobby legislators for a state Martin Luther King holiday. He traveled without security, accompanied only by an aide and the host bishop, Joseph Hcistand of the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona.
